The importance of paternity to fathers' rights

Paternity is an important aspect of fathers' rights, since once the legal identity of a father in Florida is determined, the father can pursue child custody and visitation if that is what he desires. Additionally, determining paternity also provides for the establishment of child support obligations, which the father of the child pursuing paternity should also be aware of. Both parents, either the putative father or the mother of a child, can initiate a paternity action.

A determination of paternity has important legal implications for the family as well as emotional implications for the child. Determining paternity also has relevance related to health care and inheritance concerns, among other concerns. It is important for parents and families to understand the importance and impact of an action to determine paternity.

Paternity actions can be initiated with the family law court which can order a DNA test to determine paternity. Paternity can be determined in difference ways based on the status of the parents and their relationship at different times during the child's life. Therefore, it is important to be familiar with what circumstances establish paternity and how paternity can be established in different situations. Once paternity has been established through a paternity action, using a DNA test, the court may then order child support and address any child custody concerns.

Paternity can be an incredibly significant consideration for parents, children and families and is important for all parties involved. Because of its importance, the family law process provides resources for families in different circumstances and situations to help them determine and legally establish paternity so that fathers can pursue their rights.
