Usher in child custody battle with his ex-wife

Music fans of R&B artist Usher may find it interesting to learn that recently, after the artist's 5-year-old son was caught in a pool drain and required medical attention, Usher's ex-wife filed an emergency motion seeking temporary custody of the children and decision making authority. After a long child custody battle, Usher was granted primary custody of his two boys last year.

The pool accident happened when Usher's children were under the care of his aunt, and his 5-year-old descended to the bottom of the swimming pool and got stuck in the drain. Eventually the boy was pulled out and CPR was performed. Shortly thereafter Usher's ex-wife filed the motion. His ex-wife alleges that Usher does not communicate with her regarding his whereabouts and does not tell her who is taking care of the children while he is travelling. She also noted that Usher frequently leaves the children with untrained and unqualified caregivers.

Usher's attorney noted that many people leave their children in the care of family members, and his ex-wife's expectations of who a caregiver should be are very high. The judge presiding over the case dismissed her motion, but noted that Usher should keep his ex-wife informed about not only his whereabouts but also who is taking care of the children.

Even though in this case the motion was dismissed, in some cases an emergency motion for temporary custody may be necessary. But every case is different. Child custody disputes can sometimes get complicated and often continue between parents until the child or children are grown-ups.
