Michael Jordan sued for child support

Florida residents who are fans of basketball and familiar with basketball legend Michael Jordan, who played for the Chicago Bulls, will find it interesting to learn nearly 17 years later a woman is suing Jordan for child support.

According to reports, the woman allegedly had an affair with Jordan sometime in 1995 which resulted in the birth of a boy in June of 1996. In addition to the boy having Jordan's last name, she wants full child custody and support. The woman filed a paternity claim recently and also wants Jordan to pay for the teens medical expenses.

Most parents with children are aware that after a divorce with children, or when paternity has been establishment in a relationship, typically the non-custodial parent is required to pay child support to the custodial parent until the child reaches the age of majority which is generally 18 in Florida. Every state is different and each state applies their specific child support guidelines to determine the amount.

In Florida, child support is in part determined on the number of overnights the child spends with each parent. Thus, depending on the number of overnights, child support may be reduced or eliminated. Other factors that the courts takes into consideration is the net income of both parents, health care and child care needs, medical insurance and educational costs.

Any parents with questions or concerns regarding child custody and support issues should consider consulting an experienced family law attorney to understand how the state child support guidelines affect them, what one's obligations are, options to modify an amount and more.
