Court orders arrest of Scott Storch in child support case

Multiplatinum producer Scott Storch, who has produced hits by 50 Cent and Chris Brown, reportedly owes over $28,000 in child support to the mother his child. A Florida court issued a warrant for his arrest in his child support case after he failed to appear in court for a scheduled hearing. His attorney has indicated that Storch's child support arrears will be cleared within a week. The once highly successful multiplatinum producer has been plagued by drug-related and financial woes in recent times.

Child support guidelines vary from state to state. How much child support a non-custodial parent is obligated to pay depends on various factors such as the income of both parents, as well as the expenses of the child such as education, child care, medical and amount of parenting time that each parent exercises. In Florida, the amount of child support payments depends on how many overnights a child spends with each parent. Depending on this number and equivalent percentage, child support payments may increase or decrease. If the non-custodial parent starts off with less time with the child but over the course of the years, spends more overnights with the child, then child support payments may potentially decrease. In such a case, every attempt should be made to seek a child support modification. Further, changes in income due to loss of one's job or obtaining a better- paying job also may result in a child support modification.

In the case of Scott Storch, it is unclear how much time, if any, he spends with his child and how much his finances have changed. Reports indicated that the multiplatinum producer recently has been experiencing financial woes due to his expensive habits and lifestyle. Nevertheless, he still is obligated to pay child support to the mother of his child.

As his case above illustrates, failure to pay child support and appear in court as scheduled has consequences. A court may issue a warrant for one's arrest. Thus, it is important to do one's best to keep up with child support obligations. However, if extenuating circumstances prevent a person from fulfilling his or her obligations, it is important to take steps to file a child support modification and attend all scheduled court dates.
