Boxing champ Evander Holyfield ordered to pay back child support

Former heavyweight boxing champion, Evander Holyfield was ordered by a judge to start reducing his debt of almost $564,000 by paying nearly $3,000 per month to his now 18-year old daughter. He has racked up this debt in unpaid child support. Reportedly, in addition to the back child support issues, Holyfield is facing other financial woes and his $14 million dollar home was foreclosed upon.

In general, child support guidelines vary from state to state. In Florida, the amount of child support payment depends on various factors such as the incomes of both parents, educational needs of the child or children, healthcare costs, childcare costs and the shared amount of time the child spends with each parent. Occasionally, depending on the financial circumstance of the parent obligated to pay support, the court may deviate from the State's prescribed child support guideline to prevent undue hardship. If a parent is unable to meet their monthly obligation, they may want to consider a child support modification as soon as possible to avoid a potential child support debt.

It is important for Florida residents dealing with back child support or child support debt to keep in mind that a judge may hold one in contempt of court for failure to pay child support and it may result in jail time. Other consequences include suspension of driving privileges, occupational licenses and garnishing of wages.

In today's hard economic times, as the Holyfield case above illustrates, a person may face other financial woes which make it difficult to keep up with child support payment obligations. Given the potential consequences of not paying child support, those in a financial predicament should take proactive steps to seek and explore their legal recourse and consider a child support modification.
